HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — For many, the Memorial Day holiday weekend signifies the official start of the summer season. Many have plans in the New England area to hit the open road for the beaches down on the Cape and islands or the mountains and lakes up north. For others, however, the weekend will be a time at home to think about plans for the upcoming summer season.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke to some people earlier this week who were taking in the glorious, summerlike weather down at Hingham Harbor.

“The field trips you know, are awesome,” said Troy, a volunteer at a local basketball camp in Quincy.

“[The camp that I coach] is focused on sports development,” Troy added.

Troy told WBZ NewsRadio that the camp will start up just about a month from now.

While the summer is generally a time for kids to focus less on school and take summer vacation to get some much-needed rest and relaxation in, it is also important for structure and routine to not be forgotten, which is why Troy emphasizes the importance of kids staying busy too.

“Those are just great experiences to me it just makes you a well-rounded individual, it teaches you life lessons,” Troy added.

“My daughter is going to girl scout camp in Hingham one week,” said Madeline from Hingham.

Madeline also told WBZ NewsRadio that in addition to a week at a YMCA camp, her daughter will also be doing a few weeks of summer school to stay engaged in her studies.

However, the summer wouldn’t be complete without a road trip, and Madeline said that the family plans to travel up to Montreal and Mount Desert Island too.
