BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Over the weekend, the Boston Celtics honored former New England Patriots champion Matthew Slater.

Slater was honored by the team Celtics during Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday as part of the “Heroes Among Us” program. The program was established by the Celtics in 1997 to recognize individuals “who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to their communities.”

Officials chose Slater for the honor based on “his determination to creating a brighter future for underserved individuals in New England.” Since his time with the Patriots through today, Slater has supported foster families, served as a youth mentor and championed mentorship programs.

The Celtics present a “Hero Among Us” award at every home game. Slater could be the last person given the honor, if the Celtics complete a sweep of the Dallas Mavericks.

Game 4 of the NBA Finals tips off in Dallas on Friday night at 8:30 P.M.
