BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With many people back at work following the long holiday weekend, the full impact of the Sumner Tunnel's month-long shutdown is being felt.
Drivers, if they haven't already, are devising alternate routes.
The tunnel is closed until August 5 while crews work on demolishing and repairing the tunnel's deck and road surface.
Once the work is finished, MassDOT said it will extend the safe service life of the tunnel for at least 50 years.
Officials have been encouraging drivers, like Angel, to add extra time to their commute if they drive in the area of the tunnel. "I have to cut through Chelsea, Everett, take (Rte.) 16 to cut across, then get into Somerville."
Angel said his route that normally takes about seven minutes will now take at least 22 minutes.
