MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Neighborhood splash pads are hot commodities these days. With summer break in full swing, some say it's a great way to keep the kids cool and active throughout the day.
Harris Park’ splash pad in Medford opened on May 23, earlier than scheduled due to the hot weather. For Janet and her three grandkids, it was their first time at the splash park. “I didn’t realize this [was here] until now,” she said.
With sprinklers shooting up water from the ground, water drenching those right under it and even a frog arch spilling water falls, Nicole of Medford says that the splash pad not only cools down her kid but also tire them out.
“I appreciate AC obviously but they don’t sleep as well when they don’t have time outside,” said Nicole.
Running the AC at home in this record breaking heat wave is obviously a must but can easily rack up electricity costs.
“It's a judgment call every day. I sort of err on the side of outside and just keep us at water activities,” she added.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that electricity bill for an average family could cost more than $170 this summer, up from last year's average of $168.
Summer is just starting and the heat advisories throughout Boston are still in effect until tonight at 8.
