Global Technology Outage Affects Several Boston-Area Hospitals

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Multiple hospitals in the Boston area canceled appointments on Friday because of a global technology outage.

Mass General Brigham canceled all non-emergency visits and surgeries for the day. "A major worldwide software outage has affected many of our systems today," the hospital said on its website Friday. "This means we are not able to access our clinical systems, including patient health records and scheduling."

However, the hospital said they are still open for urgent appointments and procedures. Their emergency rooms also remain open on Friday.

The Dana Farber Cancer Institute said they were also experiencing issues stemming from the outage. They told patients to stay home until further notice, and that they would post updates on their website.

Tufts Medical Center told patients to expect delays, and would contact them directly if an appointment needed to be rescheduled.

Beth Israel Lahey Health said they are open, and patients were told to still come in for scheduled appointments unless they hear otherwise.

“Our teams are working to resolve the impacts of a global technology outage and there may be delays,” BILH said on X. “We appreciate your patience.”

Hospitals are not the only place to experience difficulties because of the outage. Thousands of flights were canceled on Friday, including at Boston Logan International Airport.
