BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — MassDOT recently raised the speed limit from the junction of 95 and Rt 3 in Burlington to the NH state border.

Commuters who drive along that stretch of highway every day say that the speed limit change from 55 to 65 mph was long overdue.

“I think it was a good move because, to be honest, everyone drives more than that. So, if you have the [speed] limit low, people who know that they can go fast safely can do that," one commuter told WBZ NewsRadio.

This section of Route 3 was the only three-way freeway in Massachusetts that did not have a speed limit of 65.

MassDOT decided to raise the speed limit in part because drivers tend to go over the posted 55 limit, and the speed differential was becoming a safety issue.

“I am happy to see it go up. I think that 55 was too low given the amount of people that use that road, and frankly it’s a straight road and well maintained [so] I think that 65 or better is appropriate,” said another commuter.

For others, raising the speed limit by 10 mph was not nearly as noticeable to other drivers.

“It doesn’t matter to me, I’m going to do 80 [mph] anyways,” said another commuter.

This commuter also believes that he is not the only one who doesn’t observe the posted speed limit.

“I’d say [people] go about 80, but well over 65,” he added.
