COHASSET, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Scituate and Cohasset have been fighting over oysters for five years and counting. Now, they are heading to court.

This all started back in 2018, when Scituate, a coastal town on the South Shore, wanted to build an oyster farm in its harbor. However, that harbor is shared with Cohasset, the neighboring town, who doesn’t want the place to be commercialized.

Over the years, the fight had gotten so heated that five lawsuits were filed and more than 300 boat moorings were seized, according to The Wall Street Journal.

For context, Scituate had been using three acres out of more than 270 acre of the harbor for the oyster farm.

Cohasset said its counterpart is trying to industrialize a public asset when the farm eventually expands. However, Scituate Town Administrator Jim Boudreau said the farm is about boosting the economy and supporting the local fishing community, adding "You can't tell us what we can and can't do with our property."

No court date has been set for the lawsuit and, in the meantime, Scituate has paused its oyster farming.
