Boston (WBZ NewsRadio) — The sale tax free weekend returned to Massachusetts on Saturday Aug. 10 through Sunday Aug. 11, where the state tax fees are waived from purchases in stores and online.
Sales tax in the Bay State is 6.25 percent. This holiday weekend was signed into law back in 2018, but most people still are unaware of it.
One shopper at Assembly Row in Somerville told WBZ NewsRadio that “I didn’t even know it was a thing.”
This is also Dave’s first time learning about this event. He moved from New York in June and still have some furniture left to buy “… so I’m happy that that exists [because] everything here is pretty expensive,” he continued.
Some others can’t wait to take advantage, like Felicia, who had this weekend marked on her calendar for a while. “Why not come somewhere they have good prices and its tax free,” she said.
Items that are excluded from the sales tax holiday include:
- Meals
- Motor vehicles
- Motorboats
- Telecommunications services
- Gas
- Steam
- Electricity
- Tobacco products
- Marijuana or marijuana products
- Alcoholic beverages
- Any single item whose price is more than $2,500
A reminder, this tax break only applies to personal purchases and not for businesses and corporations.
For Julia and her daughter, they took advantage to some back-to-school shopping. “I’m actually glad the bill came out to be what it is because, hey, that’s a lot less money that I just saved today,” Julia told WBZ NewsRadio.
