BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A juvenile Humpback Whale was to blame for the ferry service delays in Boston Harbor on Thursday morning.

In a statement on X Wednesday, the MBTA said that “ferry service may experience minor delays through August 15, due to the presence of a juvenile humpback whale in Boston Harbor.”

Alerts about the young and likely lost animal were issued a couple weeks ago. The U.S. Coast Guard and local police have set up a detail at the harbor to track the whale and keep it out of harm’s way.

The staff at Boston Harbor City Cruises are also being extra cautious by keeping an eye out on deck and reducing speeds in the harbor area.

“Be aware that there is nature all around us, even in the city you’re going to see nature spreading its wings, so we got to be really appreciative of what we have and take care of it,” said Shane Kelliher, Operations Manager for Boston Harbor Cruises.

Kelliher also said that they are adopting a hyper state of vigilance by keeping speeds down in the harbor area to 10 knots or under to ensure safety.
