Former NFL running back Eugene 'Mercury' Morris, who was a member of the Miami Dolphins' undefeated Super Bowl VII team, has died at the age of 77, his family confirmed in a statement obtained by the Miami Herald Sunday (September 22) morning.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene “Mercury” Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77,” his family said in a statement. “Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion. His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football’s greats.
“Beyond the field, Mercury was a dedicated father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community. His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami.”
Morris spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Dolphins, leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns during Miami's undefeated 1972 season and rushing yards per attempt during its Super Bowl VIII season the following year. The Pennsylvania native also led the NFL in kickoff return yards during his rookie season in 1969.
Morris spent his final NFL season with the then-San Diego Chargers and retired with 4,133 career rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns on 804 attempts; 54 receptions for 543 yards and one touchdown; and 2,947 yards and three touchdowns on 111 kick returns.
