Many Braintree residents were happy to see the old Motel 6 go because of the neglected state the building was in.

“I’m glad to see it come down because of the hazardous things that could happen,” said Malcolm from Braintree.

Others have been holding out hope for something different since Braintree has several restaurants and bars already.

“You know [the town] should start building [it] back up and making it into something,” said Tyler, a Braintree resident.

Christian, another local, felt similarly about the project and was looking for something more than just a chicken joint.

“It’s been a long and ongoing conversation,” he said.

Mayor of Braintree Erin Joyce said in a statement that the decision by Chick-fil-A to back out of the $20 million development plan “was a surprise to the town so now it’s back to the drawing board.”

Torrington Properties is the company that owns the lot and said that they will be looking for a new tenant. Any future project will need planning board approval before it is finalized.

In a statement to WBZ NewsRadio, a Chick-fil-A spokesperson said that while “we are always evaluating potential new locations in the hopes of serving great food with remarkable service to new and existing guests, we are no longer pursuing the Union Street location in Braintree.
