BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — CliffHangers Inc. is a Boston company that’s taking window washing to new heights.
While hanging off the John Hancock Tower may sound like someone’s worst nightmare, the employees at CliffHangers are having a grand old time.
Kyle Oliviera was inspired to start work as a window washer after looking up at them from the ground.
“I was thinking like, dang, it must be the best thing in the world,” Oliviera said.
The job can come with unexpected perks, too.
“I’ve had people offer us drinks while we were hanging, through the windows,” said Xavier Rijos, Cliffhangers account manager.
Sam Rosario, another employee, has been working as a window washer for over 20 years.
“I like the atmosphere,” Rosario said.
The window washers can work off a building maintenance unit, which is a large sturdy swing, as well as a Bosun’s chair, which is pretty much a small piece of fabric attached to a rope.
“I don’t mind going on a rooftop, but you’re never going to catch me on a Bosun’s chair,” said CliffHangers Vice President Maria West.
The Bosun’s chair needs a very complex attachment system. Anyone using the device has to make sure nothing of theirs will fall to the ground.
“Every single item down to a phone needs to be tied back to something,” West said.
Oliviera said he enjoys the work because it gives people joy.
“You see the people inside, be all happy … because their window is getting cleaned,” Oliviera said.
