LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Lynn is putting a literal spotlight on five area underpasses to provide a safer passage for pedestrians and vehicles.
The Silsbee Street underpass is one of several that some residents said they don’t feel too comfortable walking through at night.
Residents hope that the new lighting will make the area safer, more approachable and will eliminate unwanted or illegal behavior.

“I would come here early in the morning, and it would be dark, especially during the time change, so the lights do make it a little more approachable,” said Piper, a Lynn resident who lives nearby.
“This area has definitely got some issues when it comes to [safety],” Piper added.
In a statement, the city said the MBTA owns the bridges, but the City of Lynn is paying for the $100,000 illumination project.
The scope of work includes installing new service on National Grid telephone poles and installing conduit, junction boxes, fixtures and wiring on bridge structures.
Lights will also be installed at the underpasses on Blossom, Chatham, Commercial Street and Eastern Ave.
