Fans Buzz With Excitement In Final Hours Before Celtics Season Opener

The 2024 Celtics Championship Parade.

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Celtics fans are teeming with excitement ahead of Tuesday night’s season-opener against the New York Knicks.

Before the game, the team will raise their 18th championship banner into the rafters of TD Garden.

“It's the second banner of my lifetime. I had to be in the building … I’m beyond ecstatic to see the boys finally raise that banner,” said Brad from Somerville.

Governor Maura Healey declared Tuesday, October 22, 2024 to be “Celtics Banner 18 Day” to commemorate the occasion.

Brad said he hopes the team this year will stay healthy and listen to coach Joe Mazzulla.

“That man’s wisdom is beyond his years,” Brad said.

The Celtics fandom reaches far beyond the Boston area. Rochelle is from San Jose, California, and she’s all set to go to the Garden tonight.

“I’m very excited. Just thinking about it makes me super emotional because my boyfriend got me into the Celtics and now I bleed green too,” she said.

Her boyfriend, Raymond, remembers growing up as a fan, watching the last time the Celtics won the championship in 2008.

“Just following the tradition as a kid, I grew up and I loved everything about the Celtic culture, and obviously Mr. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, along with Ray Allen, watching them raise that banner … And here we are. [I’m a ] lifelong, diehard fan.”
