BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Brockton residents get ready to say goodbye to its last Stop & Shop location which is closing next week.

The Brockton closure is part of a larger effort by the corporation to close underperforming stores in Massachusetts.

The absence of a Stop & Shop in Brockton comes as a shock for some residents who depend on the legendary local brand for affordable groceries.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke to Lorena who lives within walking distance of the store. She said that now she will have to get a ride from her daughter to shop somewhere else.

“You know, there are not too many places to shop here in the area anymore,” Lorena said.

Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan said he’s disappointed by the decision of Stop & Shop to close the last remaining location, especially after the city rallied to save the store last year.

“I don’t really see what the reason is for them to close it,” said Nick, a Brockton resident and frequent visitor of the store on North Montello Street.

Eight locations will be closed for good as of Nov. 1.
