PEMBROKE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Seven Stop & Shop locations closed Thursday, following the company’s announcement in June that it was closing “underperforming” stores.
The locations closing are:
- 932 North Montello St., Brockton
- 36 New State Highway, Raynham
- 341 Plymouth St., Halifax
- 539-571 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury
- 415 Cooley St., Springfield
- 545 Lincoln St. Worcester
- 24 Mattakeesett St., Pembroke
In Pembroke, shoppers told WBZ NewsRadio they weren’t surprised about the closure of the location on Mattakeesett Street.
“There’s a lot of competition around,” said Gloria, a Shop & Shop regular.
Some of those competing grocery stores are swaying Shop & Shop shoppers their way, including Market Basket — Gloria’s new go-to.
“Market Basket is just clean and fresh and bright,” Gloria said. “It's better value for your money.”
Some residents had a different point of view around Stop & Shop’s rising prices.
“It’s a sign of wealth in the town,” said Lisa from West Pembroke.
Still, many agreed that Shop & Shop is hard to beat, as it's been a mainstay in West Pembroke for decades.
“It's gonna be missed,” said another resident.
