LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two thirds of American drivers admitted to unsafe practices behind the wheel, according to a new AAA survey.
93% of respondents also said they use their phones while driving, with a third of those admitting to reading a text message or email behind the wheel.
Many survey participants admitted to distracted driving behind the wheel or driving at unsafe speeds, while 34% of them considered themselves to be safe and responsible drivers.
Over 80% of respondents admitted to driving through a red light, switching lanes quickly, and tailgating behind others.

While a vast majority of survey respondents agreed that drunk driving is socially unacceptable, 7% admitted to doing it within the past 30 days.
“The survey’s findings highlight just how prevalent speeding is, especially among drivers who take other risks behind the wheel,” said Mark Schieldrop, Senior Spokesperson for AAA.
“Enforcement, community outreach and education continue to be critical to curbing a wide range of risky driving behaviors and ultimately lowering the number of traffic crash fatalities in the U.S., Schieldrop added.
In 2023, 41,000 people were killed in traffic crashes, according to AAA.
