BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — U.S. Senator Ed Markey joined education advocates in Boston Monday, speaking out against President Donald Trump's plan to defund the Department of Education

The press conference was held at the Boston Museum of African American History.

President Trump has called for closing the federal agency and moving education to the control of individual states.

Sen. Markey made clear his opposition to that plan. "We're not going to allow for a small group of billionaires to dismantle the programs that are essential for every single American child to prosper in our nation," Markey said.

President Trump and supporters of the plan said it will be more efficient and cost-effective for the states to have control over education.

But at the press conference, Markey said Trump's plan is an attack against publicly funded education. "We are here today to say no to cuts in programs for kids, no to locking education into an ivory tower for those that have the money to afford it, and no to gutting public education."
