BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey touched on everything from President Donald Trump to her college basketball career during her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers Wednesday night.
Healey spoke about Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, and how they’ll affect Massachusetts.
“I just passed this massive housing bill in Massachusetts to build more homes. Our lumber’s from Canada …. [Trump] is making life so much harder and much more expensive and it's really tough,” Healey said.
Healey also went after the Trump Administration's efforts to end diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
“We need to get away from this caricature that’s been made of DEI. Say the actual words, tell me what’s wrong with diversity. It’s only made us stronger as a country,” Healey said.
Meyers asked about Healey’s thoughts on Trump’s first joint address to Congress Tuesday.
“I didn’t hear him say anything about the needs of everyday Americans,” Healey said.
Healey also said the Democratic Party needs to step up its fight against the Trump administration. She urged Democratic congressmen to get out to their districts, listen to their constituents, and explain how the Trump administration’s federal funding cuts will affect them.
Meyers also brought up Healey’s basketball career at Harvard University and her playing professionally overseas.
“Look at that hair!” Healey said, after seeing a picture of her during her Harvard days.
Healey often talked about her love for New England, including how her grandmother brought dirt from New England to the Maryland hospital where Healey was born so she could be born on New England soil.
“New England, it’s a great region. You know, we could be seemingly a little tough on the outside but we’re people of tremendous warmth and heart and grit and we look after one another,” Healey said.
