BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Methuen residents can now attempt to keep unwanted guests away from their doorsteps.

Residents can add their addresses to a “Do Not Knock” registry prohibiting solicitors from visiting their property.

Several people support the concept calling it a “great idea,” noting that soliciting must be a real issue if the city is implementing this law.

Comments across social media claimed the soliciting is still happening even with the active registry.

Any solicitor or canvasser who violates the ordinance and enters someone’s premises will be penalized with a $300 fine.

The new ordinance comes as neighborhoods see a rise in robberies across the country involving suspects disguised as utility workers.

Earlier this month, two men posed as city workers attempted to rob an elderly man at gunpoint inside his apartment in Dorchester.
