BELMONT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One group of locals has been meeting at a Dunkin’ in Belmont for years, and the coffee chain has taken notice.

“We get to all hang out, all ages and just be together and have a moment to just kind of stop in the world when it’s moving really quickly,” said Elizabeth Millstein, an unofficial member of the group.

The group earned the moniker “The Breakfast Club,” referencing the classic 1985 film directed by John Hughes.

Millstein said she and her family have been joining in on the fun for the last few years.

“When a pretty girl and her family come in I invite them to sit with us, that’s kinda how it happened,” said Gordon Shaw, known as the ringleader of the group.

Shaw said people have gathered at the Dunkin’ on Trapelo Road for around 15 years, and that it happens pretty naturally.

“You sit there and somebody comes in and after a while you nod to them and then you say ‘Hi.’ And then they come sit down and then you got an old friend,” Shaw said.

For the 41st anniversary of the detention day in the film, and the 40th anniversary of the film itself, Dunkin’ decided to surprise the group with a plaque that reads “Dunkin’, Home Of The Breakfast Club.”

The plaque now hangs over the table where the group always sits, and where Shaw said anyone is welcome.

“It’s just like a big magnet, everybody just sits down and joins us,” Shaw said.
