29 Cats Fatally Mauled By 2 Pit Bulls At Shelter

DOTHAN, Ala. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An Alabama animal shelter's outdated, faulty equipment allowed two pit bulls to fatally maul 29 cats according to city officials.

The dead cats were discovered by workers of the Dothan Animal Shelter on Thursday.

“Those dogs forced their way out of a pen," shelter director Bill Banks told WTVY-TV. "Then, they pushed hard enough on galvanized bars to knock (the bars) out of their clamps."

City Commissioner Beth Kenward says the shelter is outdated and believes the city should've helped upgrade the facility a long time ago.

“It's sad, and there is no doubt that (a new shelter) is overdue,” Mayor Mark Saliba added.

The two pit bulls only arrived at the shelter Wednesday after being found roaming. A decision still hasn't been made on what to do with the dogs.

Staff and shelter volunteers are being offered counseling.
