BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Thousands of people walked through Boston for the 35th Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk on Saturday.
Dana-Farber hoped to raise 9 million dollars for cancer research from the walk. Roughly 8,500 participants chose a distance of 5K, 10K, a half marathon, or a full marathon, all crossing the finish line directly across from Fenway Park.
Pictures of Jimmy Fund Walk Heroes were shown throughout the walk. Each Hero is a Dana-Farber Cancer Institute patient who volunteered to share their story. Teams could match up with a Hero to walk and fundraise in their honor.
“We have a hero representing every half mile along the route,” said the Director of the Jimmy Fund Walk Zack Blackburn. “When you walk by, a walk tradition is you give a tap on the sign and just let them know that you’re thinking about them.”
The Jimmy Fund Walk also coincides with the Jimmy Fund’s 75th anniversary.
