CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cambridge Police are investigating a nearly four-year-old missing persons case.
Veteran Mitchel Iviquel was last seen on March 31, 2020 in Somerville, Mass. Police said that she was homeless, unemployed and living in the Central Square area in Cambridge, Mass., at the time of her disappearance.
Robert Goulston, the director of communications and media relations for the Cambridge Police Department, shared how Iviquel served her country in the early 2000s. “She served in Iraq and Kuwait, and she was honorably discharged" in 2007, he said.
The only lead that police have is that Iviquel was traveling with a Black man and his daughter, who were both deaf and communicated with sign language. They were believed to be homeless like Iviquel.
Goulston explained that “through our investigation, we were able to develop that she did befriend a father and daughter at some point before she went missing.”
He said that if they received more information about that, it could mean a breakthrough for the case. “We’re hoping that if we did generate some information on that, then that might lead to some information about where Iviquel might be right now.”
Expressing the difficulties of investigating a cold case, Goulston said, “It’s just been really cold [in terms of leads], and that’s what’s been so frustrating for the detectives.”
Iviquel’s family told the police that they hope they can make progress on finding their loved one. “We just want to find her, it’s been close to four years. We’re still holding out hope she is fine. We love her.”
Her family described her as hardworking, caring and helpful.
Iviquel was 42 years old at the time of her disappearance, and police said she is 5-foot-3-inch Black woman. Cambridge Police asked that anyone with information contact them.
