SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A field study in Somerville and Cambridge is targeting the cities’ rodent population.

The Rodent Family Control Study aims to be a long-term solution to curb and eliminate rat reproduction in the cities without using harmful poisons and traps. Instead, the study will use use a non-toxic bait called Evolve, where the active ingredient will kill egg production in female rats and disrupt sperm production in males.

“By testing this non-toxic method, the City hopes to develop a safer, more effective approach to managing urban rat populations,” the City of Somerville said.

The study is looking for residents living in the Hoyt Field area of Cambridge and Lincoln Park area of Somerville. Researchers with the study will place baits containing fertility control products near the properties

The study began summer 2024 and will end early spring or summer this year, but they are still looking for more volunteers. For more, visit here.
