A Former Postal Service Worker Has Been Charged With Mail Theft

 BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former postal service worker has been indicted by a federal grand jury of theft of mail and theft of government funds, according to a press release from the Department of Justice.  

The individual, Michael Murray, 36, of Lynn, was charged with one count of mail theft by an employee and one count of theft of government funds. Murray was arrested on Friday morning and appeared in Boston federal court at 11 a.m. Friday morning.

The indictment states that from approximately September 2022 through July 2023, Murray worked as a USPS postal clerk at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office.  

From about April 2023 through July 2023, Murray used his position to steal hundreds of pieces of mail such as gift cards, cash and checks, reaching $3,422. It is also alleged that Murray stole and fraudulently negotiated USPS money orders by generating them for postal customers for his own use totaling approximately $5,131, according to the press release.  

The penalty of mail theft by an employee provides a sentence of up to five years in prison, three of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Theft of government funds over $1,000 provides a higher sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
