QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Once known as U.S. Naval Air Station Squantum, Squantum Point Park is now considered an isolated gem for dogs and their owners during the summer.

"Wallows in the mud. She loves to go in, lay down. If I had her ball, she'd be drowning it right now," Lauren Peyton proclaimed.

Located on the Neponset River, Peyton said the park is one of her favorite places to take Frida, her mini-Australian Shepard — especially during the low tide.

"The tide comes up and out really far. Like you can see right now it's very, very low so there's a lot of beach for dogs run on."

The grassy waterfront park with views of the Boston skyline is ideal for owners and their furry friends to gain reprieve from the heat as temperatures reach the mid to high 90's in the city.

"She gets really hot, so any chance she gets to cool down, she's definitely running for it," said Peyton.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recently declared a Heat Emergency from Wednesday through Friday. City officials are encouraging residents to indulge in the splash pads at parks and public pools during the extreme heat conditions, something Lauren says Frida is happy to do.

"As an Australian Shepherd, she's not naturally a necessarily a swimmer but once she decided that the water was fun, you can't get her out if it."
