BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Thousands of esports fans packed up MGM Music Hall in Fenway over the weekend to witness the world championship of Rainbow Six Siege.
The world’s top 20 esports teams, including Oxygen Esports based in New England, battled for the title in The Six Invitational 2025 along with a million dollar prize.
Rainbow Six Siege is a first-person shooter game that gained popularity within the esports community since it was released in 2015.
“It’s such a huge thing within esport just because of the intensity of the games,” one player told WBZ NewsRadio. “It's always down to the wire; it's always so close.”
Maxime Vial of Ubisoft, the game’s developer, said that the intention when building Rainbow Six Siege has always been to make it into a big spectacle sporting event.
“It needs to have this depth that is going to let… players [engage with the game] in the long-term, wanting to refine strategy and get better at it constantly,” he said.
Vial added that they expected nearly 4,000 fans at this year's Invitational to watch the final competition.
“It’s all unique,” he continued. “No two games of Siege are ever the same.”
At the end of the weekend, FaZe Clan took home the title and the million dollar grand prize.
