PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The sounds of Native American woodwinds have been filling the air around the Mayflower II replica in Plymouth. WBZ NewsRadio went to the area to check it out and learn more about local personality Skip Waite, who is the man behind the sounds.

“Born and brought up [in] Brockton, Hanson, South Shore,” Waite said.

Health and weather dependent, Skip Waite sits along the waterfront most days in Plymouth, playing music and demonstrating Native American flutes he carves himself, a hobby he’s mastered in retirement.

“[So], I picked up a little wood carving knife and realized I liked carving,” Waite added.

In addition to carving the flutes, Waite also carves flowers out of wood that people who come to visit the area can easily pack up and take home as a souvenir.

“And [the flowers] come right apart, so they’re easy to take with you,” Waite said.

What started out as a fun retirement hobby for Skip but has also become a way of life.

“I just hope that I am here for a lot longer,” Waite quipped.
