LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An employee of Mount Pleasant Golf Club spotted a moose walking along the woods Thursday morning at around 7 a.m. in Lowell.
Dave Wattles is the Black Bear and Furbearer Project Leader with MassWildlife. He first received a call about the moose Thursday morning. The animal had been spotted, but then vanished by the railroad tracks.
About an hour later, the moose was found in the canal. The moose was not in distress while in the canal, however it was trapped. His team worked to help free it. Wattles told WBZ NewsRadio:
We were able to get it over to a shallower area, and then with the help of lots of people we were able to haul it a bit up onto the bay...carry it up into the street to where our truck was, load it up to the back of the truck and then we were able to transport it out to a wildlife management area out beyond 4-95.
The moose was described as being around 500 or 600 pounds, and roughly five years old.
