BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —There’s a new hiking trail in Boston hidden in plain sight.
The City On The Hills Trail is a 31 mile long route that leads hikers from the Charles River in West Roxbury through city streets and parks, towards the harbor at Castle Island.
Miles Howard with Walking City Trails was the main organizer of this new attraction. He told WBZ NewsRadio that the trail offers a glimpse into overlooked views of Boston.
“The number one thing that I hear on group walks, surveying trips, you name it, when we go through these parks is ‘wow, I had no idea that this was here,’” he said.
And that’s the theme he and the team built the trail around —“[to show] off the wealth of Boston’s greenspace ecosystem.”
The trail spans across nine neighborhoods and over 40 green spaces, including a stop at the highest elevation in the city. It’s divided up into five sections, six to seven miles each.
Howard said the entire project, from initial conception to building the paths and drawing out the maps, took about a year to complete.
“A lot of people assume that to go for a hike you [got to] be in the back country, you got to be far away from a city,” he continued.
In this case, the team at Walking City Trails is bringing nature closer to home.
