BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Veterans and elected officials gathered in South Boston for the annual Memorial Day service for Thomas J. Fitzgerald VFW Post 561 Sunday.
The service marched from Post 561 to Medal of Honor Park for a wreath laying ceremony at the South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
"This is about those we lost and the families who are still bearing that grief and pain," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.
Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn said it is important to remember the true meaning of the holiday.
"It’s not the start of summer and it’s not the start of barbecue season," Flynn told WBZ NewsRadio. "It’s about the sacrifice so many U.S. servicemen and women have made to our nation so that we’re free."
