WESTWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — AAA Northeast is warning New England drivers about the dangers of potholes on the roads as temperatures fluctuate from warm to freezing.
AAA reminded drivers that potholes and cracks in the road’s surface are especially prominent now because of the inconsistent stretches of weather we have had throughout this winter.
The lack of snow in the Boston area this winter along with below freezing temperatures and copious amounts of rain are the perfect storm for potholes, according to AAA. Data from the National Weather Service indicates that Boston received 7.64 inches of precipitation while Worcester received 8.18 inches in January 2024.
AAA advised drivers that they are not completely helpless when it comes to avoiding potholes in the roads and subsequent damage to their vehicles.

“The absolutely most important way to battle against potholes is to properly inflate tires,” said Mark Schieldrop, Senior Spokesperson for AAA Northeast. “Drivers must also keep ample distance between their car and the car in front of them and diligently scan the road, especially at night and during rainstorms, to identify potholes and react to them”, he added.
Drivers can report a pothole to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation by calling 857-368-4636.
AAA Northeast is a not-for-profit auto club with 67 offices in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and New York, providing more than 6 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, finance, and auto-related services.
