BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Activists rallied at the State House Tuesday to support a host of bills that would shore up animal rights in Massachusetts.

Some of the new legislation would require more oversight in animal boarding facilities, ban the use of some circus animals and bar landlords from restricting a tenant's eligibility based on the size or breed of their dog.

Animal Legal Defense Fund Legislative Manager Stephanie Harris said Massachusetts has relatively strong protections for animals, but the state lags behind in these areas.

"Families [and] companion animals are truly suffering," Harris said.

One of the bills includes Ollie's Law which would create statewide safety regulations for kennels.

The bill is named after a labradoodle that died after a dog fight at a pet daycare in Longmeadow, Mass.
