LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The best student athletes on the North Shore are competing in the annual Agganis All-Star Games in Lynn this week.

The games began Sunday with an opening ceremony at Manning Field, followed by lacrosse, baseball, and softball games at Manning and Fraser fields.

"The Agganis Games date back to the mid-1950s when Harry Agganis, who was the starting first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, from Lynn and BU, died tragically while playing for the Red Sox. He died of a pulmonary embolism," said Agganis Foundation Executive Director Paul Halloran.

The Red Sox, the Daily Item, and local businessman Harold Zimman set up the foundation to present scholarships to student athletes. The foundation raises money for those scholarships through the all-star games.

According to Halloran, the Agganis Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million to 1,062 student athletes.

The Agganis All-Star Games continue with basketball games at Lynn Classical High School on Monday, soccer games at Manning Field on Tuesday, and a football game at Manning on Wednesday, the final day.
