BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sports fans rejoice! Christmas has come early for sports fans as Monday marks the 32nd sports equinox. The sports equinox is when all four major American sports leagues will be in play on the same day.
Monday night’s action will be headlined by Game 3 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers, and Monday Night Football between the Washington Commanders and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NBA will feature 11 games of their own, including the Boston Celtics taking on the New Orleans Pelicans, and the NHL will have two games taking place tonight including the Bruins traveling to Ottawa to take on the Senators.
Although it may sound incredibly rare for the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL all to take place on the same day, it has become a yearly occurrence. Until 2015, there had been only 14 occurrences of the sports equinox. Since that point, there has been at least one every year and sometimes multiple.
And if that’s not enough sports for you in one day, the MLS Playoffs are underway today as well.
With the NBA and NHL schedules continually starting earlier, and the NFL being a mainstay for Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays in the fall, don’t expect the sport equinox to be going away anytime soon.
