BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Allston with a loyal following is closing its doors in a couple of weeks after 27 years of business.
Grasshopper is a restaurant on N Beacon Street that offers vegetarian and vegan Asian food, with mostly Vietnamese fare.
The owner, Hoai Nguyen, shared that he plans to take some time off, but it isn’t the end for Grasshopper. He hopes to reopen the restaurant in a few months, ideally in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood.

Grasshopper is closing down because the landlord decided not to renew their lease.
A representative for the landlord said that back rent and dumpster sanitation issues forced them not to renew.
However, Grasshopper's owner said he had no outstanding rent when the landlord made this decision.

Nguyen shared that he’s “really sad… but right now I feel really happy with my customers,” who have been telling him about their love for Grasshopper and sharing how sorry they are the restaurant is shutting down.
“They come in and they say, ‘I’m sorry to hear that.’ It makes me feel like, OK, I lose this place but I got a lot of customers [who] love Grasshopper.”
Some customers said they would order food every day until they close, added Nguyen.
Boston.com reported that the last day Grasshopper will be open is May 29.
