BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — When beloved live music venue Great Scott in Allston closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, it left music fans crushed and a gaping hole in Boston's music scene.
Since 1976 when it first opened, the club launched new local acts and booked some of the most eclectic performers ranging from hip-hop, to rock, to indie, to freak-folk, to industrial, to metal.
The doors had hardly shut 44 years later before efforts were underway to find a new location.
A petition was started to re-open Great Scott collecting 25,000 signatures. And a crowdfunding campaign raised more than $300,000.
An ownership team was formed, and a decision was made to buy a new location at 1 Harvard Ave. just about two blocks from the original spot that was on Commonwealth Ave.
When the new Great Scott opens in 2026, the owners said it will feature two separate venues; Great Scott with a capacity of 300, and the 75-person capacity O'Brien's Pub, its longtime sister club.
The owners also said they remain committed to keeping Great Scott a cultural hub for the community fostering a thriving musical scene.
