BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The state’s Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) agency elevated almost all of Massachusetts, except for the Cape and Islands, to a Level 3 – Critical Drought status
Central and Northeast regions of Mass. are now under level 3 restrictions. This means more rules for affected communities, including water-use restrictions and bans on open burning, according to the state’s Drought Management Plan.
“Climate change is reshaping our region’s weather patterns, resulting in warmer and drier fall and winter seasons,” EEA Rebecca Tepper said in a statement. “Water conservation is more important than ever.”
Meanwhile, the Cape and Islands remain at Level 0 – Normal Conditions.
According to EEA, over the last month, the state received less than an inch of rain. Many areas recorded their lowest rainfall ever at this time of year while fire activity increased across the state.
There are currently 37 active wildfires. The windy, dry conditions increase the risk of flames spreading
As of Tuesday afternoon, rain is not in the forecast Wednesday and Thursday.
Officials are strongly urging residents and businesses to help conserving water.
