SUDBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several alumni of longtime local women’s rugby team, Beantown FC, are trying to save the league’s legacy ahead of the upcoming season.
Beantown FC is Boston's women’s rugby team and has been a staple in the community since its inception in the 1970s.
Earlier this month, the executive board announced the team will cease operations after nearly 50 years. The club lost 20 players and 10 executive members to the Boston Banshees, the new professional rugby team in town.
Kelly Seary, a Beantown FC alumni, said the team was left with only three people in the end.
“You can’t feel the team, and you can’t do all of the administrative work with just three people,” Seary told WBZ NewsRadio.
However, they are not giving up just yet to let the league fade away. They are working on community outreach to spread the news and recruit nearly two dozen new players.
“We have a very basic goal right now, and that is to feel the team again hopefully in fall 2026,” she said.
With the success of the U.S Women’s Rugby team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning a bronze medal, she is hopeful in this endeavor.
“Rugby is on the rise, and so now is not the time for Beantown to fade away and just become a footnote in the history books,” she said.
