HYANNIS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Scientists confirmed a pod of orca whales has been seen off the coast of Cape Cod this week.

First, the captain and crew of the SimonSez sportfishing charter caught the pod on video.

And then, a team of scientists from the New England Aquarium spotted the pod off the coast of Nantucket on Sunday.

The orcas were swimming on the surface with dolphins when they were seen.

Scientists say orcas seen in New England waters are very unusual.

The so-called 'killer whales' are actually the largest members of the dolphin family and are known as one of the world's most powerful predators.

The New England Aquarium says a scallop fisherman caught an orca whale on video off the coast of Chatham last May.

The large male was named Old Thom and has been the only killer whale regularly seen in the North Atlantic.
