WELLESLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Roger Babson, who founded Babson College, filed a patent 91 years ago today for a parking meter that was powered by the parked car.

"He filed the first patent for a parking meter, even though his patent was never actually converted into a real parking meter that was actually used," Babson College lecturer Peter Cohan said. "But he was the one who filed the first patent."

Babson College will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Historical documents related to Babson—such as the patent—will be on display throughout the academic year.

"We'll all be learning a lot about it over the course of the year," Cohan said. "I have seen a list of major things that Roger Babson did that will be celebrated over the next several months."
