BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) is putting kids in charge of building Boston at its annual KidsBuild! event.

Hundreds of kids gathered at BSASpace in downtown for the two-day activity, which offers young designers a glimpse into the world of urban planning, designing and construction.

This is the organization’s 12th year hosting this event, which is “fully fueled by volunteer support,” Taylor Johnson with the BSA told WBZ NewsRadio.

The kids go through all the steps in developing a community, from sketching blueprints and gathering materials to building their designs. Some designs pitched include museums, libraries, schools, and apartment building.

Abby said she added some green spaces to the imaginary city. “We’re going to make some fruit trees and a vegetable garden,” she said.

Kent Kovac, a local architect, said he started bringing his son, Tanner, to the educational program when he was young. This year, Tanner was a volunteer.

“The last time I did KidsBuild!, I built a museum, and I really tried to focus on sustainable resources like using solar technology and using geothermal technology,” Tanner said.

Johnson said that the program also celebrates the newly proclaimed “Architecture Week,” and provides more hands-on learning opportunities.

“The idea that you are able to create something from your head and make it a reality in a couple of hours is not something you’d get during school,” she said.
