BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) Ahead of Hurricane Milton's expected landfall, the Animal Rescue League of Boston is preparing to take in animals from Florida later this week.

Many shelters in Florida are struggling after Hurricane Helene came through last week, and are just about to crack under the devastation Milton is expected to bring. The ARL is partnering with the Best Friends Animal Society to help out.

To free up room for the Florida pet influx, ARL is encouraging people to adopt a furry friend from one of their shelters.

“Any type of freeing up resources allows us to continue to support other organizations in situations like these,” said Sam Fincke with the ARL. “We’ve been moving animals around within our own organization to make room, and to be able to ensure that we have the resources to take on the care of these dogs.”

Along with adopting, those who want to help out the ARL during this time can donate, volunteer and even foster animals.

They expect the first animals to arrive later this week and they're making sure the animals and people are safe during transport.
