FALL RIVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A nine-week-old kitten was rescued by the Animal Rescue League of Boston after the kitten was found in distress 20 feet under a boardwalk.

The kitten, who has now been named Wharf, was found near the Cove Restaurant and Marina in Fall River after a couple walking the boardwalk heard the kitten meowing and contacted rescue workers.

Rescuers found the kitten curled up on a rock, and had to use ropes and a humane cat trap to pull it to safety. The area was too steep and rocky for rescuers to effective approach the cat on foot, according to the ARL.

The kitten was taken to ARL’s Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center and given a full veterinary exam. Wharf was determined to be in good health overall.

It is not known why Wharf was found under the boardwalk, but the ARL is intent on finding him a family who will give him a loving home.

The ARL said that Wharf will be placed up for adoption in the coming weeks.
