BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A one-year-old female cat is facing several months of treatment and rehabilitation after suffering second and third-degree burns on over half her body, the Animal Rescue League of Boston announced Friday.
ARL said the cat, now named Era, was found in a work shed in Oxford, Massachusetts and transported to ARL’s Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center for treatment.
Once in ARL care, the league's veterinary team assessed that Era has second and third-degree burns covering 55% of her body. Her condition is described as "guarded, but closely optimistic."
Treatment consists of pain management and twice-weekly wound debridement involving removing dead skin and exposing the new skin underneath to promote healing. ARL called the procedures "intensive and painful" and the "beginning of a very long road to recovery."
It is unknown at this time what caused Era's burns and whether it was an intentional act.
