SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new champion was crowned at Kiss 108’s Annual Turkey Toss event on Wednesday.

High school students all across the Commonwealth gathered at the Baxter Park Amphitheater at Assembly Row, with one student from each school attempting to toss a frozen turkey the farthest they can to another student.

For the past five years, Everett High School has been the reigning champion of the Turkey Toss, but this year, that streak was broken.

Arlington High School senior Drew Beck was the one to catch the 20-pound turkey thrown the farthest of any school this year by fellow senior Brady Bekkenhuis.

“The biggest thing for me this year going into it was that last year, I lost sleep over this loss, so I came out here with something to prove and I proved it,” Bekkenhuis said.

There were concerns that Bekkenhuis crossed the line during the throw, but after video review their victory was confirmed. Everett High Failed to catch their turkey.

Beyond being excited for the win, Beck was grateful for the support of his fellow schoolmates and was thrilled to be able to deliver a special moment to them.

“I’m glad we got in here, got it done, I’m glad talking to new fans, it’s good to have people be happy about you doing something,” Beck said.

Bekkenhuis echoed Beck’s excitement while also explaining just how much pressure he put on himself to get this right.

“We’re meant for this, our student body shows up, they show out for us, we can’t let them down, so we’re doing this for the community of Arlington, we love this stuff,” Bekkenhuis said.
