BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An art installation made entirely of painted ice boxes has been set up outside Boston’s South Station.

This art piece, named “Elevar La Cultura,” was created by Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez and consists of a pyramid made from gold painted coolers.

One side of the tower consists of religious icons painted on numerous individual boxes. On the opposite side, there is a large mural of a mother and child stretching over multiple coolers.

“This large-scale 20ft tall immersive installation by Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez infuses cultural textiles, spiritual objects, and mural work. Blending ancestral symbolism with contemporary survival tools, the installation reclaims space and uplifts the beauty, resilience, and cultural power of marginalized communities. These coolers carry more than food or flowers. They carry stories. They carry legacy. They carry dreams,” Marka27’s website description of the piece said.

The installation is part of The Greenway’s public arts program, with this piece in particular being curated by Deja Belardo, Associate Curator of Civic Programs and Visual Art at The Shed in New York City.

Many passersby have been impressed by the piece, such as Karen from Hanson, who had to double back to take a better look at it.

“I thought, no, I need a picture so I can share with some of my friends,” Karen said.

She also mentioned how the mural of the mother and child reminded her of the Virgin Mary with Jesus.

Mariana from Canton was also impressed by the art and is happy to have expressions of creativity in the city.

“From over there I was like, ‘what is that?’ I just came by to take a closer look,” Mariana said. “I think to have something beautiful to look at just kind of reminds you there’s beauty in the world.”

The installation is set to be displayed until December.
