BRIGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Athan's Bakery, a mainstay on Washington Street in Brighton Center, closed its doors Thursday.

According to owner Aristides Athanasopoulos, the decision to close was prompted by the landlord doubling the rent to $20,000 a month.

"It’s really sad, really sad, because we have many customers, often customers for many years," said Gladys, who worked at Athan's for 17 years.

John, who owns a business down the block, told WBZ NewsRadio that Athan's is the latest of several empty storefronts to hit Washington Street.

"There’s not a lot of businesses here to attract attention to the area, so other businesses I feel suffer because of it," DiPietro said.

Athan's has a second location in Brookline, which will remain open while Athanasopoulos looks for a new storefront in the Brighton area.

"I hope in the future we can find another place because Athan’s in Brighton is really, really necessary, because many people love this place," Gladys said.
