ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Attleboro is seeking artists who can help spruce up a downtown construction site with their artwork.

In partnership with the Attleboro Arts Museum, the Attleboro Public Library, TDI Attleboro, and the New England Foundation for the Arts, the City is hosting a contest as part of its "Art in the Open" public arts initiative.

Artists will send in submissions of original artwork that will go on a banner attached to a large fence at a construction site on South Main Street.

"The fence is 130 feet wide," Attleboro Arts Museum Executive Director Mim Brooks Fawcett told WBZ NewsRadio Friday. "It’s an extensive piece of property."

According to the contest rules, the artwork must reflect certain themes that Attleboro residents stated were important to them in a recent community survey: people, community, togetherness, feeling welcome, safety and safe spaces, vibrancy, progressive attitude and equity, and an emphasis on art, culture, education, and natural resources.

The City will take the winning artwork and copy it onto the banner.

"It could be digital art. It could be a painting. As long as it is photographed in high resolution and we get a JPEG that we can then transfer onto vinyl," Fawcett said.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 27. The winner's artwork will be displayed from June 15, 2023 to Jan. 15, 2024.

"We always walk by fences and it’s kinda nice to see something other than back hoes or whatever else is going on," said Fawcett.
